Frequently asked questions

1. Does a child’s past education (in an international school or a normal school in Vietnam) affect his/her transition into VFIS?

No, it doesn’t. All pupils will be invited for an entrance assessment to test their readiness to study in an English-speaking environment based on a holistic evaluation. The assessment reflects Finnish curriculum standards that considere-perspectives on a child’s growth including cognitive, linguistic, social/emotional capability and behavioural patterns. Based on the entrance assessment result, VFIS will make the admissions decision and consider an additional foundation course at the beginning of the year or during the school year if required for those accepted.

2. Will my child be accepted in VFIS without any prior English language skills?

It depends on their age, entrance assessment results and other academic reports (?). The requirement in English level is lower for first graders. The school has an English language preparation course during the summer time and encourages pupils to join to be familiar with VFIS’s English-speaking environment. In general, the older the child is, the higher our expectations are with regard to their English ability. We also provide additional support through our English as a Second Language Programme (ESL) to non-native speakers during the school year. The length of the course depends on their admissions test results.

3. Will my child able to transfer within VFIS from International Programme to Billingual programme, and vice versa?

A pupil from VFIS’s International programme can transfer to the Billingual programme if their level of academic Vietnamese meets our requirement based on the entrance test.

A pupil studying in VFIS’s Billigual programme can transfer to the International programme but is encouraged to transfer from sixth grade to be fully prepared for IB programme.
