VFIS Summer School 2021: “Living like a Finn”

For the fourth year in a row, Finland was voted the happiest country in the world (https://worldhappiness.report/ed/2021/). One of Finland’s secrets to happiness is its innovative education system.

This year’s summer school “Living like a Finn” draws on a unique feature of the Finnish curriculum, something called transversal competences. These are skills and knowledge that prepare students for life in societies undergoing rapid and even unpredictable change. The seven transversal competences are:

  • Thinking and learning to learn
  • Cultural competence, interaction and self-expression
  • Taking care of oneself and managing daily life
  • Multiliteracy
  • ICT Competence
  • Working life competence and entrepreneurship
  • Participation, involvement and building a sustainable future

These transversal competences are promoted through every subject, with variation in emphasis depending on the subject’s nature.
