Study History at VFIS
History, in the recent common sense, are the stories covered with the dust of time. At VFIS, we think differently: history appears in a single breath of life.
In the globalised world, the Vietnamese youths nowadays confront two conflicts: maintaining Vietnamese cultural identity and integrating into the world, becoming global citizens. History has an ability to constructively create the balance between perception and action.
On the one hand, learning about history helps the youth recognise the connection between them and their ancestors, that they are the continuity of the Vietnamese ethic, in both glory and bitterness, pride and shame that help them understand themselves as people with roots, not purposeless wanderers. Be proud of the ancestors’ achievements to build the will of progression, and recognise the faults of previous generations to help them be conscious of training themselves for the guilty and bitterness will never be relapsed. As a result of that, the young generation will become more comprehensive about themselves, to observe themselves in the past both in the future as a “hyphen” to bridge the Vietnamese people.
On the other hand, researching history will help the young generation connect with the surrounding world. When discovering about the civilisations of human beings, the journey that humans have overcome delighting moments of finding the truths, and many moments of sadness from the losses of wars, anger, hatred and scareness; therefore, the young generation will treasure and share the values that humans have held, respect differentiation, securing peace together, building the present and the future in a spirit of cooperation, peace and non-violence. The more understanding of history, there will be more compassion and tolerance.
The History programme at VFIS is designed based on the aforementioned foundations.
When participating in VFIS History’s learning activities, students will be trained specific rationale in learning the subject (the cause and effect reasoning, chronological reasoning), presentation skills, information search and analysis from many sources; engaging in the thrive of restoring/revise a story as it has already happened, empathising to the past, and scrutinise a question: How the knowledge and philosophy of History is applied practically in the present life? In History class, critical thinking, opinions sharing and differentiation respect are consistent requirements to students and teachers throughout the learning.
Studying History is a journey of exploring self identity and the world.
