Principal's message to students amid coronavirus outbreak

Dear Students,

I’d like to say a few words to you now that our school will be closed for a second week.

First of all, “How are you?”

I know it must be strange to be told that you cannot come to school. However, the decision to close schools was made because we adults want to protect you. This new virus nCoV-2019 is spreading fast, and we adults don’t yet know how dangerous it is. We want you to be safe.

Here at school, your teachers are thinking about you. We wish you could be here, back in class where you belong. While we wait for the happy day of reunion, we are working to make sure you keep learning. We realise that learning at home is not easy. Adopting new ways of doing things requires flexibility, one of our core values. We understand that children need help to learn. Luckily you have parents, older siblings, aunts and uncles and grandparents who can help you. It is okay not to know how to do new things right away. Do not get frustrated. Many skills take practice, so don’t give up too easily. Persevere.

Remember also to keep up your normal routines. Go to sleep on time, eat regular meals, do schoolwork, play, watch tv, go outside in the sunshine, take a walk in the cool evening, spend time with your family. Of course you should avoid crowded places and people who are sick, but try to keep your life as normal as possible.
It is always important to look after your health, but especially now. Number one is washing hands properly with soap and water. Number two is covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Use a tissue or the crook of your arm. Number three is keeping your hands and fingers away from your face. Make sure you are getting enough sleep.

We hope you are enjoying all the new types of learning online. Why not pick up a book and read it if you are feeling bored. Ask your parents what was their favourite book as a child. Perhaps they can tell you the story. Now that you have more time at home, help your parents and grandparents with daily tasks.

Here at school we are waiting for your return. Classrooms should be full of children’s voices, playgrounds full of laughter. A school feels empty without its students. And when you return, we will do everything we can to keep you safe and happy. Until then...

We miss you!
